SEO for Ghanaian businesses: where to start

By the Huupa teamUpdated 3 min read

SEO means making it easy for Google to understand your website and show it to people searching for what you sell. You do not need a big budget. You need a few good foundations and steady habits.

Start with what people search for

Think about the words a customer types when they need you. Add where you are. "Plumber in Kumasi" brings people who are ready to call. "Plumbing" brings everyone.

Write down ten phrases like this. Each one can become a page, or a section of a page, on your site.

Set up Google Search Console

Search Console is free and shows how Google sees your site.

  1. Go to Search Console and add your website.
  2. Verify that you own it. Your host or developer can help with this step.
  3. Submit your sitemap so Google finds all your pages.
  4. Come back weekly. Look at the searches that show your site and how many people click.

This tells you which phrases already work and which pages deserve more attention. Huupa connects Search Console and Google Analytics and sends you a short summary every Friday.

Fix the basics on every page

Page title

The title is the blue line in search results. Put the main phrase near the front and keep it under about 60 characters. Give every page its own title.

Description

The description is the grey text under the title. It does not change your ranking directly, but a clear one makes more people click. Aim for about 150 characters.

One main heading

Each page should have one main heading that says what the page is about, followed by smaller headings that break the content into parts.

Plain, useful content

Answer the question a customer would ask. Write the way you would explain it to someone in your shop.

Make it work on a phone

Most visitors in Ghana use phones, often on slower connections. Check that your pages load quickly, text is readable without zooming, and buttons are easy to tap. Large images are the most common reason a page is slow.

Get found locally

  • Create or claim your Google Business Profile with the right name, address, phone number and opening hours.
  • Keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere online.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews.

Check your own website

Paste your address and get a plain-English health report in about 30 seconds. It is free and needs no account.

Habits that grow traffic

  • Publish helpful pages regularly. One good guide a month beats ten rushed ones.
  • Update old pages. Fresh, correct information keeps pages ranking.
  • Link between your pages, so visitors and Google can find related content.
  • Fix what is broken. Missing pages and slow pages cost you visitors.

Questions

How long does SEO take?

Expect weeks before you see movement and months for strong results. It builds over time.

Do I need to pay for SEO?

Not to begin. The steps above cost nothing but time. Paid help makes sense once you know which pages matter.

Does my host affect my SEO?

Yes. A slow or often-offline host hurts you, and a hacked site can be removed from results. Reliable hosting is part of SEO.
