Bulk SMS prices in Ghana, and how to read them

By the Huupa teamUpdated 3 min read

Bulk SMS is still the most direct way to reach customers in Ghana, because nearly everyone reads their texts. The price per message looks simple until you learn how messages are counted. This guide explains the pricing so you can compare providers fairly.

How a text is counted

You are not charged per message. You are charged per page, and a page is a fixed number of characters.

  • A single page holds 160 characters in standard text.
  • Once a message runs past that, it is split into pages of 153 characters each, so a 200-character message is two pages.
  • If your message contains a character outside the standard set, such as an emoji or a letter used in Twi like ɛ or ɔ, the whole message switches to Unicode. Then a page holds only 70 characters.

So a 150-character message with one emoji can cost three credits instead of one. If you write in standard characters, you pay for far fewer pages.

Per-text price, not bundle price

Providers advertise bundles, such as "GHS 100 buys 3,000 messages". Divide the price by the number of messages to find the cost of one text. Larger bundles cost less per text.

Here are Huupa's bundles. There is no monthly fee. You buy credits when you need them.

Credits that never expire cost a little more per text than credits that expire after three months. Choose never-expire if you send now and then, and the cheaper expiring credits if you send every month.

How Huupa compares

When we checked in September 2026, mNotify's published rates ran from GHS 0.035 a text on a GHS 10 bundle to GHS 0.027 on bundles of GHS 1,000 and above. Huupa starts at GHS 0.026 a text for the largest bundles, and is cheaper than mNotify at the same spend. Prices change, so check the current rates on each provider's page before you decide.

What else to check

  • Your sender name. Messages from "YourShop" are trusted more than messages from a random number. Ask how a sender name is registered and how long it takes.
  • Delivery reports. You should see which messages arrived, which failed and why.
  • Opt-out. Marketing messages must let people say stop. A good provider handles this for you.
  • Sending times. Huupa sends promotional texts only between 8am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday.
  • Developer access. If you want your own software to send texts, check that the provider has an API.

Questions

Do SMS credits expire?

It depends on the provider and the bundle. Huupa offers both: credits that never expire, and credits that expire after three months at a lower price.

Why did my message cost more than one credit?

It was longer than 160 characters, or it contained an emoji or special letter that switched it to Unicode. Check the page count before you send.

Can I text every network in Ghana?

Yes. Messages reach MTN, Telecel and AT numbers.
