How much does web hosting cost in Ghana?

By the Huupa teamUpdated 3 min read

Web hosting in Ghana can cost anything from a few cedis a month to several hundred. The number on the pricing page is rarely the whole bill, so this guide shows what a plan actually includes and what to ask before you pay.

What you are paying for

A hosting plan rents you space on a computer that stays online, plus the software that serves your pages to visitors. Three things decide the price.

  • How many sites share the computer. Cheap plans put hundreds of websites on one machine. Better plans keep each site in its own protected space, so a problem on a neighbour's site cannot reach yours.
  • What is included. Backups, email and security checks are sometimes free and sometimes extra.
  • Who answers when something breaks. A low price often means no human support.

At Huupa, hosting starts at GHS 20 a month, and every plan includes business email, daily backups, a free SSL certificate and security checks.

Questions to ask before you pay

Ask thisWhy it matters
What is the price when I renew? The first year is often discounted. The second year can cost much more.
Is business email included? Some hosts charge for every mailbox, and it adds up.
Are backups included, and how often?A daily backup turns a disaster into an inconvenience.
Is my site separated from other sites?Separation stops one hacked site from infecting the rest.
Can I reach a person quickly?A site that is down costs you customers every hour.
Can I take my site with me if I leave? You should be able to move without a fight.

Renewal prices

Check the renewal price before you buy, not after. If it is not written on the page, ask.

Email

Email on your own domain, like [email protected], looks professional and builds trust. Find out whether it is included or charged per mailbox.

Cleaning up a hacked site

One serious infection can cost more than several years of decent hosting. Daily scans and backups are cheap insurance. Our guide to how to tell if your website has been hacked shows the warning signs.

Which type of hosting do you need?

Most small businesses need a plan for one to ten websites with a few mailboxes. You only need a virtual server if your site is very busy, runs unusual software, or you have someone who can manage a server for you.

If you already pay a host and are unhappy, you do not have to start from scratch. See how to move a website to a new host without losing visitors.

Hosting that is ready to use

Every Huupa hosting plan comes with business email, daily backups and security checks switched on, billed in cedis.

Questions

Is cheap hosting in Ghana safe?

It can be, if each site is separated from the others and backed up every day. Ask your host how both are done before you pay.

Do I need a .gh domain to host in Ghana?

No. A .com domain works with any host. A .com.gh domain signals a Ghanaian business, and registering one needs a contact in Ghana.

Can I keep my domain if I change host?

Yes. Your domain is separate from your hosting. Moving your site means changing where the domain points, which our guide on pointing your domain to a new host explains step by step.
